Exterior Signage

Custom signs

In this guide, you will learn how to design custom signs using various elements that are part of our overall signage system. The same simple rules for positioning the DHL Logo and using our topography apply. Please be sure to review the related guides.

As a rule, the DHL Logo runs across the entire width of a sign. Use the base unit to determine all spacing between the logo, edges of the sign, text or other elements.

The space between the logo and the upper edge of the sign is three base units.

For shorter signs, reduce the space two base units. In special cases that involve very small signs, you may center the logo vertically.

Combining logo, text and other elements

The minimum space between the logo and text is three base units, the maximum is 13 base units.

The space between the logo and text must be at least three base units.

The space between the logo and text may not exceed 13 base units.

Use the base unit to determine the size of arrows and other symbols as well as the spacing between and to the text blocks. Make sure to leave sufficient space at the bottom edge of the sign.

Miscellaneous sign formats and text amounts

In some circumstances you may need to modify the DHL Logo to accommodate certain sign formats or text. Use the width of the sign to determine the size of the logo – making it either one-half, one-third or (as an exception) one-fourth the width of the sign. Always place the logo on the right side of the sign. Format the lateral margins and font size to ensure the best legibility and a balanced overall appearance. Use at least three base units between the bottom of the logo and the text.

Important: Do not use the gradient on any signage!

Sign with logo that is one-half the width of the sign.

Sign with logo that is one-third the width of the sign. This option is ideal for very wide signs with a low height.

Formatting the text

Use our font Delivery Bold on all signage. We recommend using only one font size per element. Do not use more than two font sizes per element. Format all text black, left-aligned and mixed case.

Determine the uppercase letter height using the base unit based on the sign elements. The standard height is one base unit.

To calculate the size of larger or smaller text, use a multiple of the base unit. Keep it simple: scale up or down using round numbers (e.g. 50%, 75%, 125%, 150%).

Be sure your line spacing is visually appealing. We recommend 110% and 120%. Line spacing set to 132.38% is equal to one base unit.

Signs without logo

Not all signs have to include the DHL Logo. Include the logo on signs that are important for branding - where it is important for people to see that it belongs to DHL. In places where there are many signs, be sure to consider what might be considered overuse of the logo or excessive branding. Although signs without the DHL Logo do not have to be yellow, please be sure all text is printed in our Delivery font. One example of signs that don’t require the DHL logo are the dock number signs DHL warehouses.

We recommend reviewing whether the logo and brand colors are necessary on a case by case basis, especially if you are created prohibition signs or other signs where branding would be inappropriate.
