But what’s the story behind our iconic brand presence? How did DHL’s red and yellow become synonymous with quality, trust, and excellence? And who are the 600,000 people that keep us moving, united by their passion and purpose to connect people and improve lives?

When three became one
In January 2003, something big was happening that would revolutionize the logistics industry forever. In a move to become the world’s leading logistics company, we brought three businesses together – Danzas, Euro Express, and DHL Worldwide Express – under one global brand. This was the start of the iconic DHL brand that we know and love today.

Growing our DHL family
We welcomed Exel into the family in 2005 – a strategic move that turned out to be a real game-changer for the logistics industry and our customers around the globe. Bringing together our worldwide network with world-class supply chain expertise, we secured our position as logistics leaders and could now deliver excellence to more customers than ever before.

Transforming tomorrow together
This was the year the curtain rose on our very first DHL Innovation Center. Located near DHL HQ in Germany, this new research hub provided a space for our experts and customers to collaborate, create and develop cutting-edge solutions for the challenges of tomorrow. The first of four global Innovation Centers, we now host over 13,000 visitors a year – ensuring our customers are at the heart of everything we do.

Pioneering the path to sustainability
As the world learned more about the effects of climate change, we felt strongly that we had to set an example for our industry. In 2008, DHL committed to being a sustainability leader and introduced our GoGreen Climate Protection Program – the first major logistics company to set a quantifiable climate protection target. This assured customers, partners and colleagues that we were passionate about, and committed to, a sustainable future.

Restoring hope in times of crisis with GARD
Not all true heroes wear capes – some wear DHL GoHelp uniforms. We launched our GoHelp disaster management program with the UN in 2005 and continue to play a critical role in global humanitarian efforts. Our teams are truly committed to supporting communities in crisis, with 55 deployments and 70,000 tons of aid managed to date. Through GoHelp and our Get Airports Ready for Disaster (GARD) initiative which launched in 2009, we support the effective handling of aid when disaster strikes. From the 2015 Nepal earthquake to Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, our volunteers have helped rebuild lives around the world.

Delivering a brighter future
As one of the world’s largest employers, we see it as our responsibility to support the next generation of talent. We created GoTeach in 2010: a program that improves employment chances for young people from vulnerable backgrounds across the globe. Partnering with Teach For All and SOS Children’s Villages, our mission was to empower young learners with the skills and professional experience they’d need to thrive and reach their potential.

Advancing our commitment to reduced emissions
We were excited to put our first-ever electric vehicle (EV) on the road in 2014. With almost zero emissions and low-noise, this groundbreaking electric delivery van kickstarted our ever-growing e-fleet. Today, we’re always trying out new electric transport solutions and introducing what works to our sustainable vehicle fleet – which now includes over 36,000 EVs worldwide.

Committing to a cleaner future
It was time to take our environmental commitments even further – for our people, our customers, and the planet. In 2017, we set an ambitious, industry-leading goal to reduce all our logistics-related emissions to net zero by 2050. This meant sustainability had to be considered at every step, not only to transform our own operations but empowering our customers to reach their environmental targets, too.

In 2019, we set a new bar for excellence. We launched a five-year strategy that ensured customer satisfaction would remain in our hearts and minds. Developed with colleagues around the world, Strategy 2025 focused on delivering world-class, market-leading quality and best-in-class service to every single customer. By adopting the latest digital technologies and sustainable practices, we are continually finding new ways to deliver the excellence our customers deserve.

Opening doors to the world
Our GoTrade program launched in 2020 to boost sustainable and economic growth in developing countries around the world. We knew we could provide vital support where complex customs procedures made it difficult to trade globally. By cutting red tape and providing support and advice, our GoTrade experts simplify the complexities of global trade to help emerging economies flourish.

Driving sustainability forward
Sustainability is not a destination, it’s a journey. That’s why in 2021 we drew up our Sustainability Roadmap; a detailed plan to guide us towards our ambitious environmental, social, and governance goals. We set bold targets to electrify our last-mile delivery fleet, increase the use of sustainable fuels and offer greener alternatives across our products and services. Our roadmap was about driving action, igniting innovation, and delivering choice for climate-conscious customers.

Accelerate sustainable Growth
Strategy 2030 launches to seize new opportunities and maximize our impact on the world of logistics and beyond. While our purpose, values and customer promise remain unwavering, we introduce valuable additions to support our ambition of increasing our revenue by 50% by 2030. ‘Green Logistics’ is embedded as a fourth bottom line and we’re continuing to scale up our focus on e-commerce. As part of our continued journey to excellence, we are revitalizing First Choice to drive quality and customer experience. The five-year strategy unites our global teams to bring our shared vision of accelerating sustainable growth to life and create long-lasting impact.
